The Department of Botany started Honours Course from July, 2008 onwards as recommended by the NAAC team in the year 2007. It is the youngest Honours department of Maulana Azad College. The Department offers B.Sc.Honours (BOTANY), Pass Subjects: Zoology and Chemistry. All students of this Department compulsorily attend Environmental Science classes, which are interdisciplinary in nature.
As per rule the students have to go through six semesters to complete the UG courses under the University of Calcutta.
Our Department offers Botany as General subject for the students of the Department of Zoology and Microbiology. In addition, the students of the department can choose MIL as Bengali/English/Urdu/Arabic and they can also opt two subjects Chemistry and Zoology as their General course subjects.
Well-experienced and highly qualified faculty members of the department selected by the PSC, WB, have made consistent efforts to improve the students learning, research and development processes. The students of this department are highly benefitted by the knowledge of the teachers of the department.
Apart from usual methods like chalk and talk, modern teaching methods are frequently used such as power-point based lectures through LCD projector, use of models and posters, software based analysis for certain courses such as bioinformatics, morphometrics etc.
Since the discipline relies on field-based studies, the students regularly participate in field surveys and excursions in different phyto-geographic regions of India. Students get opportunity to handle different sophisticated instruments.
Students are participated in different activities of NSS, blood donation camp, thallasemia detection camp etc.
Students are also exposed to Interdisciplinary lectures delivered by eminent scientists that can help them in competitive exams.
Students are also constantly encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities. Since the inception of the DBT-STAR college scheme [funded by the Dept of Biotechnology] the students of the Dept have been regularly participating in seminars, science exhibitions, quiz contests, group discussions and small projects.
Students regularly participate in Seminars and Competitions organized by Eminent Institutions / organisations (viz. Birla Tyres, IQST, Indian Institute of Packaging, Consulting Management Incorporate Pvt. Ltd. Etc).
Regarding students progression nearly 80% students continue their studies in different fields including Post Graduate after completion of UG course.
The Department wishes to provide more national level exposure to its students through collaborative work with various Universities and Institutes in India. The Department always strives for improvement in qualitative output by teaching methods, research programmes, regular organization of seminars, visits to other institutions, helping the students publish their research works etc. The Department also proposes to create job-oriented course modules for its students and provide consultancy services for competitive examinations.
As part of a reputed government college it draws the best and the brightest along with a good number of students from different backgrounds specially from Minority Families, our mission is to inculcate ethical values and promote social responsibility through an innovative learning process in basic sciences and humanities.
